Overview

Soule Road School's Character Value Program aligns with our 3 school rules:

Respect yourself.

Respect others.

Respect your environment.

Throughout the school year, 8 core values will be covered to promote a positive school climate and further develop a sense of community. Each month will focus on a different core value. These values include: Respect, Responsibility, Acceptance, Kindness, Perseverance, Cooperation, Friendship, and Honesty.

Each character value culminates with a school wide assembly where we recognize students nominated by faculty for exemplifying the particular core value. For each Character Value Assembly, a classroom is chosen to help create a presentation, such as a video or skits.

We continue to incorporate literacy into our Character Value Program with our Character Value Book of the Month. Throughout the year, I plan to visit classrooms each month to read the following books:

Respect: The Junkyard Wonders, by Patricia Polacco

Resonsibility: Brave Irene, by William Steig

Acceptance: Big Al, by Andrew Clements

Kindness: Each Kindness, by Jacueline Woodson

Perseverance: Dex: The Heart of a Hero, by Carayln Buehner

Cooperation: Extra Yarn, by Mac Bennett

Friendship: Officer Buckle and Gloria, by Peggy Rathmann

Honesty: The Honest-to-Goodness Truth, by Patricia McKissack

This year, in an attempt to reinforce the children's connection to our 8 character values, we have introduced What a Character! slips. Each time a student demonstrates the Character Value of the Month, it is written on a What a Character! slip. Every classroom will have an envelop with these slips. Once the act is observed and recorded on the slip, it must be signed by an adult (adults from home or at school). For every completed What a Character! slip, the class earns a colored sticker. Each classroom represents a different color. Envelops with completed slips will be collected once a week and every earned sticker will be used to fill in the CHARACTER poster hanging in the cafeteria.
